Blagaye Pa Christian Community, Nimba, Garr-Bain, Liberia
The Blagaye Pa Christian Community grappled with a severe water crisis. Their water source consisted of three hand-dug wells and a single hand pump, which had unfortunately fallen into disrepair, rendering it completely unusable. Forced to lower buckets into the wells, residents faced a laborious and time-consuming task, inadvertently introducing contaminants into their water supply. These open wells, exposed to the elements, became breeding grounds for dirt and insects, turning the water into a hazardous source of contamination.
Recognizing the potential dangers lurking in their water sources, the community members took every precaution to avoid them. Women and children, bearing the responsibility of water collection, embarked on arduous journeys to distant communities in search of cleaner, safer water. As a result, adults missed out on work opportunities and essential household tasks that could have enhanced their families’ well-being. Meanwhile, children fell behind in their studies, risking their educational futures and the possibility of dropping out entirely.
Aware of the urgent need for change, the residents were determined to resolve the water crisis but found themselves without the essential resources to take action. Faced with an overwhelming challenge, community leaders reached out with hope. Our dedicated team journeyed to the heart of Blagaye Pa Christian Community, where we discovered a pressing need for clean water and a community eager to become exemplary caretakers of a new well.
Our team expertly restored the well, ensuring clean, safe water with shock chlorination and new installations, providing the community with a dependable water source!
To ensure the well’s success, a dedicated water committee, chosen by the community, was established. This proactive team collects nominal fees to fund future maintenance, safeguarding the well’s functionality for years to come. Equipped with specialized training, they oversee a comprehensive maintenance schedule.
In addition, our team conducted a workshop for the community, centered on vital sanitation and hygiene practices. They learned about crucial disease prevention techniques, highlighted the importance of handwashing, and provided hands-on demonstrations of water pump maintenance and safe water handling. This session equipped the community with the knowledge and skills needed to preserve their precious new water source.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
“We were getting drinking water from a very far distance. During the dry season, we were left with no options but to get water from open wells, which has been a serious problem for us. The rehabilitated water well will help us in so many ways. We will not suffer for water again.”
-Mother Lydia Jerboh, 49-year old farmer
