School District Success Story

CHALLENGE

Landscape and irrigation management for the El Segundo School District (ESSD) is the responsibility of Bennett Landscape, Harbor City, CA. According to Jesus “JD” De La Torre, Irrigation Supervisor for Bennett, the ESSD had multiple traditional timers with a total of more than 300 zones of irrigation spread over the campuses. “My crews and I were making 4 or 5 trips each week to each campus.” JD explains, “and I was personally driving more than 25 miles each day just to check controllers.”

THE WEATHERMATIC SOLUTION

“When we heard about Weathermatic’s new SmartLink Network that links controllers on multiple sites to a single web site that allows controller management from any smart phone, tablet or PC, we decided to propose to the ESSD that we change out their traditional controllers for Weathermatic SmartLine and SmartLink.”

“Working with our Weathermatic representative, Mike Davidson, Spec Management, and Matt Schiller, our Aqua Flo distributor salesperson, we were able to show the ESSD the potential savings possible by installing the Weathermatic system. The savings,” JD explains, “include a potential of 20 to 60 percent on water usage with SmartLine climate based watering as well as significant maintenance labor savings on controller programming thanks to SmartLink.”

RESULT

“After the first full month of operation, we have seen water usage reduction on some controllers of as much as 70 percent! The best part,” JD notes, “is that conversion of each controller installation was accomplished in less than one hour thanks to the SmartLink Aircard “plug n play’ design and the SLW15 wireless weather station. Total time to install an Aircard and SLW was less than 10 minutes. Additionally, we found the website format easy to use. Virtually no training was required and Weathermatic’s online SmartLink Team members like Dana Summers, insured that our first installations were smooth and easy.”

“Now I manage all of the 26 sites from my smart phone,” JD explains. “SmartLink lets me know if there is a power failure or other problem at a site so that I can have our crews concentrate on needed repairs and broken sprinklers rather than re-programming controllers. SmartLink lets me set up as many sites as I need and identify the controllers at each site as well as name each zone. Weathermatic has thought of everything.”

“Now I no longer dread the next daylight savings time change that used to require on site visits to every campus,” JD concludes, “SmartLine automatically adjusts the time in the Spring and Fall.”

Bennett Landscape has been installing and managing landscape and irrigation for nearly 30 years. Sean Bennett is the president/owner of Bennett Landscaping. “Bennett Landscape wants to be known as leader in green technology and we also see SmartLine/SmartLink as an opportunity to add a new profit center to our business to supplement new construction,” Bennett, explains, “and I am sure we will be changing over more of our clients to SmartLine/SmartLink in the future.”
